Systems
About:

Definition:

Systems

  • Some manufacturers develop products and occasionally they develop more than one product or accessories that work together as a system offering more than the sum of the parts.
  • These systems are often promoted as a single item and sometimes individual components will not be sold separately since the performance of one is reliant upon the other to optimize their collective performance.
  • Substitution of one product or accessory in a system may lead to diminished performance compared to the original combination.

Systems(in the contect of BIM)

  • A defined object class in Uniclass2, between Elements and Products,
  • i.e. Elements are made of Systems, and Systems are made of Products.
  • Systems are typically executed by a single trade,
  • e.g. the Painting systems, the Plastering systems, the Mechanical ventilation systems, the Artificial turf systems.
  • So this is the trade level in the object hierarchy.
  • Systems may be proprietary or custom-made.
  • ISO 12006-2 uses ‘system’ as a term for objects of ALL classes – this is a ‘systems engineering’ view of the world.
  • The ISO does not have a specific name for objects at this level in the hierarchy – it just says that Elements are recursive,
  • i.e. Elements are made of sub-elements, which are made of sub-sub-elements and so forth.

Relevance to Sustainable Construction:

Opinion:

Examples:

  • A system may be a sub-set of components of an elemental assembly
    • (e.g. part of a wall e.g. external insulation and render finish)
  • or a sub-set of components that cross boundaries between elemental assemblies
    • (e.g. air tightness layer with membranes, tapes and grommets)
  • or a sub-set that cover the junction between two elements
    • (e.g. between wall and floor e.g. coved skirting, cove former, capping and adhesive).
