IDBE Interdisciplinary Design in the Built Environment
About:

Dear Colleague

The Cambridge part-time master’s course, Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment, continues to go from strength to strength. Offered jointly by the Departments of Engineering and Architecture at Cambridge, it brings together each year a cohort of future leaders from all areas of the built environment – clients, contractors, the professions, regulators and others.  International in its scope, breadth and ambition, the course is accredited as a masters for further learning by key engineering institutions including the ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE, and CIBSE, and it also has recognition from RIBA and RICS.

The course covers innovative processes and products: developing skills like leadership and communication, promoting BIM, focusing on the challenge of the sustainability agenda, and covering the latest developments in intelligent buildings and smart cities. Teamwork skills are developed through project work undertaken in small interdisciplinary teams of students, providing unique learning opportunities in how to design integrated proposals.

In the second year of the course all students complete, as their individual assignment, a 15,000 word thesis. This is an opportunity to address in depth a self-selected topic (within the scope of the course) and to produce a piece of extended writing that represents an original contribution on a subject of personal interest. Many graduates of the course have gone on to turn their theses into conference papers, journal articles, books, or even new business streams.

As well as improving their skills, graduates of the course report increased self-confidence in their own abilities, the desire to seek new challenges or responsibilities, and greatly enhanced career prospects. Many are inspired to seek new challenges and take on new responsibilities within their organisation or beyond.

We are currently recruiting for entry in September 2015, and I am delighted to attach the course brochure. Fuller details can be found on our website www.idbe.arct.cam.ac.uk Obviously the course team would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have by telephone or email. All those joining the course will become members of Wolfson College, Cambridge, one of the University’s 31 colleges.

If you yourself are not interested in the course but you have a colleague of friend who might be, please do forward on this email and the attached brochure.

Yours sincerely

Dr Sebastian Macmillan

I am pleased to attach a copy of the new IDBE brochure for the course starting in September 2012.
IDBE is going from strength to strength, firmly rooted in its Arup-inspired ambitions, but absorbing new ideas and content from the worlds of international practice and academia.
Leading practitioners, industry thinkers and established academics deliver the course content. For a glimpse of some of those who have lectured in the last year we have uploaded brief videos on YouTube, where you will also find our site visits, and some of our student presentations. The link is here:
The course continues to bring together 25-30 enthusiastic and capable young mid-career professionals each year from engineering, architecture, surveying, project management and other key disciplines, creating an excellent educational atmosphere with its own distinctive collaborative learning style. The course is accredited by key professional institutes. About two thirds are from UK, but others from every continent join the course (subject to meeting the university’s strict English language requirements.)
Our website www.idbe.org contains further details and gives a flavour of course content. The newsletters illustrate the residential weeks and also feature the careers of some of our past graduates. In the Gallery section, you will find examples of the studio work undertaken on the course. Recent masters theses produced on the course are held in pdf format, and we have recently had our older material scanned to pdf. A complete list of all theses is now on the web (under Gallery) and shortly we shall be uploading a selection of them in pdf format on open access as a knowledge resource. Later we hope to do something similar with coursework essays. We will contact you again when this goes live.
The student experience is greatly enhanced by the quality of their colleagues on the course, and we are always looking for enthusiastic and capable individuals to join IDBE for two years. I’d be very grateful if you could forward this brochure to anyone who may be interested in applying for entry in September. Closing date for applications is 30th June, and informal enquires about the course are welcome at any time.
Kind regards
Sebastian
