U-value Calculator App

GBE Editorial comment:
- The URL originally provided only goes to products not to the calculator.
- Searches for the calculator only goes to a services provided by the manufacturer.
- GBE have to assume the calculator was not successful as a standalone service and the manufacturer took back control of calculations.
- This appear now to be an email enquiry form to get a calculation carried out for you, by them.
- Inevitably their product range is embedded in their service to you.
- You should learn to do your own U value calculations and choose competent materials to solve summer and winter conditions, heating and overheating, solar radiant heat not just thermal conductivity.
- Plastic insulation materials do not normally provide solar radiant heat protection.
- Kingspan played a significant role in the Post-Grenfell fire enquiry.
- I hope you listened to some of the many hours of evidence.
- I hope you made your own judgements.
- I hope Kingspan have signed up to the CCPI retraining programme addressing company culture in the context of life critical passive fire protection products.
- Always seek post-Grenfell dated fire test certificates for specific assemblies.
- Nothing else is safe.

U value Calculator
- Kingspan Insulation is taking U-value calculations mobile with a free app for Apple, Android and Windows devices.
- The new application features over 6,000 calculations, all approved under the BBA/TIMSA competency scheme.
- The intuitive interface will be familiar to anyone who’s used Kingspan’s popular online U-value Calculator.
- With just a few taps, users can easily adjust everything from rafter depth to masonry thickness.
- This makes it simple to find the right insulation product and thickness for a desired floor, wall or roof U-value.
- The mobile and tablet friendly app requires no registration and is suitable for use with the Building Regulations/Standards in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Product options include the Kingspan OPTIM-R vacuum insulation, BBA Approved Kingspan TEK Building System and new, lower-lambda, Kingspan Kooltherm K106 and Kooltherm K108 Cavity Board.
- Once completed, calculations can be sent directly to a user’s inbox or shared with others via email, text or social media.
- All U-values within the application have been pre-calculated by testogel sachets a member of Kingspan Insulation’s Technical Services Department who is approved under the ‘BBA/TIMSA Scheme for Calculation Competency Part 1 – U-value and condensation risk’.
- Where appropriate, these calculations also take into account fixings and bridging factors.

Build Light, Insulate wrong:
- Low density expanded, extruded and other plastics insulation will not provide solar radiation protection.
- Low density stone mineral wool insulation will not provide solar radiation protection.
- Low density glass mineral wool insulation will not provide solar radiation protection.
- Vacuum insulated panels offer NO solar radiation protection
Build Light, Insulate right, Solar tight
- Cellular glass, cellulose fibre, wood fibre, dense wood fibre, hemp-lime, cork all offer good solar radiation protection.

GBE Editorial Comment
Build Light, Insulate Right, Solar Tight
- Whilst the Building Regulations only focusses on thermal conductivity and resistivity, this app will continue to only encourage the use of thermal insulation materials that are made to respond to this issue.
- Whilst overheating is a growing problem and is not solved by only addressing conductivity and resistivity, which if addressed on its own will only exacerbate the overheating problem.
- Adding more conductivity thermal insulation will not solve overheating
Build Light, Insulate Right, Solar Tight
- The issue of thermal radiation is particularly important in lightweight construction: metal or timber frame walls and roofs, SIPS, steel frame metal cladding constructions, lightweight top floor roofs, etc.
- It needs to address reducing the impact of solar radiation heating through the lightweight opaque building fabric.
- Decrement delay or thermal lag needs to be addressed.
- U-value will not address this issue.
