- Recycled aluminium which uses significant less energy to produce saving on CO2 generation
- Recycling aluminium with coatings:
- There is a small financial difference in the value of scrap aluminium based on the presence of coatings or not
- Melting of PPC, PVDF or PVF2 coated aluminium will burn off coatings and generate polluting emissions
- Acid dipping of PPC, PVDF or PVF2 coated aluminium will create a sludge that is hazardous and expensive to dispose of
- Scraping or sanding of PPC or PVDF or PVF2 coating from aluminium will create particulates that may be released to the atmosphere, or micro-plastics that if not collected thoroughly may find their way to drains or watercourses and eventually to the oceans.
- Anodic oxide coatings being aluminium oxide does not generate the same residues and so simplifies recycling
- Uncoated aluminium does not generate the same residues and so simplifies recycling

- Stewardship:
- The UK aluminium sector regards Stewardship too complicated and difficult to implement and would become too restrictive.
- Their sector cannot be any worse than the timber sector and Stewardship is well established whilst not comprehensive there yet.
- Metals Stewardship has been discussed at Eden Project and pursued with copper cladding materials.
Reduce:
- Use of Virgin Aluminium used
- Weight by using aluminium in preference to steel, but aluminium has high deflection compared to steel
- Less self-weight to carry may help reduce the size of sections to do a job
Reclaim:
- Dismantle for reclaim for reuse (build it with the right fasteners)
- Protect surfaces and sections from damage
Reuse:
- Reuse dismantled and reclaimed systems
Recycle:
- Recycled Aluminium uses 5% (1/20th) of the energy to make virgin aluminium
Recycling:
- Use recycled aluminium in preference to virgin aluminium, significant reduction in CO2 generated in manufacture.
- Design for recycling:
- Avoid coatings as they are chemically intensive to remove and generate waste residues.
- Coated with PPC and PVF2 are slightly more difficult to remove than anodising
- Anodizing is an alloy of aluminium and is slightly more readily recycled
- Mill finish is most easy to recycle but not everybody likes the oxides that form on unfinished aluminium
- Mill finished aluminium reflects the colour of the sky: blue, white, grey or sunrise, sun and sunset
- Reflections off mill finish or silver coating can cause glare, distraction, overheating, migraine
