1 Definitions
Breathing Sheathing Board
Breathable Sheathing Board
A board which is vapour permeable enough to allow it to be used externally in timber frame construction.

Used in Breathing wall and breathing roof construction outside of the insulation layer and inside the weather protection
(NGS BRM ‘10)
- Breathing is misleading: its not about air movement, its about moisture vapour movement
- Sheathing: boarding that is fixed to the face of framing, light timber frame in particular, enclosing the framing in readiness for following trades.
- Thermally Insulating: some sheathing boards can also be thermally insulating by conduction and radiation and dense enough to prevent heat transfer by convection.
- Acoustically Insulating: airtight breathing sheathing can also be an acoustic barrier reducing noise transfer inwards or outwards
- Rigid Insulation:
- a term applied to plastic insulation boards often fixed to timber or steel framed construction and spanning over the framing;
- the term can also be applied to breathing sheathing boards, but depending upon the materials can have significantly different properties and can be incompetent or competent in their role.
- Racking strength: Some sheathing boards have strength in compression and tension and some can resist diagonal forces, a framed construction with sheathing boards attached to one or both faces, with a force applied on one corner could be distorted into multiple parallelograms; racking strength boards will resist this distortion.
- Stressed Skin: sheathing with racking strength can become part of the structure of a building where the frame and the sheathing work together as a whole to reinforce each other and can resist compression, tension, shear, torsion, racking, etc.
- Materials:
- most timber panel products can be sheathing;
- most timber panels products are not breathing;
- some OSB with low adhesive can be moisture permeable;
- dense wood fibre boards are most often breathing and rigid
