INSURE Interreg Proposal
About:
GBE Green Building Encyclopaedia response to INSURE Interreg Proposal
- Brian Murphy is no longer part of GreenSpec but now developing Green Building Encyclopaedia a
- “One stop shop for Environmental Building Know-how”
- Brian has recently been involved in Interreg IVB NEW, CAP’EM project, initially as GreenSpec UK sub-partner and during 12 months extension as National Green Specification Ltd. UK Partner.
- Agrodome were Netherlands Partner in the same project.
- CAPEM was also a partner of Envireo a Strategic Alliance of 4 Interreg Projects in which NT were partners of Living Green Project;
- Brian Murphy was active in an initial Envireo briefing meeting, presented CAPEM Compass to SusStations end of project meeting in Belfast and in the final Envireo dissemination conference in Loose en Gohelle France.
Programme: Interreg NWE
Name: INSURE (INnovative SUstainable REnovation).
Lead partner: HAN,
Partners: Arnhem, Thomas Moore University (Belgium), Fondation Agrodome (NL), National Trust (UK)
In a nutshell the project seeks to:
- engage with:
- the demand side (not-for-profit owners/managers of pre-1920 buildings)
- the supply side (SMEs, architects and other professionals)
- ensure that sustainable solutions are both specified and implemented correctly.
INSURE and GBE are a good match in that we have similar aspirations
We differ in that GBE addresses all building types, but is trying to focus on existing building stock first.
GBE:
- seeks out solutions to problems:
- products
- accessories
- systems
- finds solution providers (Micro SMEs)
- manufacturers
- suppliers
- installers
- aims to persuade manufacturers and suppliers to have Robust Specifications written about their solutions;
- Robust product clauses
- Robust assembly clauses
- Robust workmanship clauses
- disseminate them via GBE website using linked up:
- company pages
- product pages
- specification pages
- linked to encyclopaedia pages to ensure greater understanding:
- Checklists: Including: Refurb and Retrofit, Decent Homes, GreenDeal,
- Jargon busters: including: abbreviations, acronyms, words and phrases
- Design guides:
- Q&A pages,
- Material guides,
- Construction guides, etc.
- Horizon 2020 Built2Spec Project seminar comes to mind they are developing accountability tools to ensure all bad decision makers can be held accountable for their actions so things do get build to spec.
The aims include:
- increase energy efficiency
- reduce CO2 emissions
- generate renewable energy where feasible
- by brining near to market (and market) solutions to grow the green SME sector.
INSURE and GBE are a good match in that we have similar aspirations
GBE:
- Prefer the Fabric-First approach to achieve significant reduction in energy demand
- Care about overheating as much as fuel poverty and choosing the right insulation properties for applications
- Use limited plastics if they significantly help other products do their job
- Have a preference for carbon negative bio-based materials with appropriate properties
- Seek simple Renewable Energy to fill the gap not met by the improved building fabric
- Support the tax paying Micro-SME to whittle away at the market share of the low-taxpaying Big Enterprises
- Manufacturers, Suppliers, Installers, Servers,
There will be a focus on:
- bio-based solutions
- energy efficiency products
- energy efficiency processes
INSURE and GBE are a good match in that we have similar aspirations
GBE:
- Have a preference for carbon negative bio-based materials
- Seeking bio-based materials exhibiting appropriate propertied for historic fabric: vapour open, hygroscopicity, moisture mass, moisture transport, vapour permeable, airtight, healthy, indoor climate regulating, etc.
- Use limited plastics if they significantly help other products do their job
- Guiding people on how to out perform their building’s systems
- Increase energy efficiency through monitoring, metering, controls-with-attitude and learning interfaces
- Seek simple Renewable Energy to fill the gap not met by the improved building fabric and enhanced controls
The NT’s focus and pilot sites will be (relatively) remote rural dwellings located in a national park (South Downs).
We will be using the model developed by the Fit for the Future Network (see attached progress report) for the demand side.
Determining best in class products and technologies can be helped by these pilots:
- Working on remote dwellings: probably subjected to the most extreme external exposure conditions
- National Trust properties in national parks: solutions applicable to conservation quality buildings
Solutions may be applicable to a wider public in similar and less extreme conditions.
Fit for the Future Network enables:
- The discovery of many local MicroSME solutions by many over a wide geographical area
- The assimilation of knowledge by many
- The trialing and developing of solutions by a community
- Britta Riley a garden in my apartmentR&DIY Research & Do It Yourself, Open Source Collaboration
- Developing a different culture around owning and maintaining stuff within a community
- Interreg Makers and Fixers comes to mind
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DhpJRX1hhU&feature=youtu.be&app=desktop
- The development of solutions within this community then sharing with the mainstream
- Interreg Application TransEco by CD2E France comes to mind
GBE can offer CPD, training and coaching in specification assimilation and spec writing and auditing
GBE can collect and post all of FftFN findings for use by others including mainstream.
For the supply side each project partner has been asked to name SMEs (or SME similar) organisations that they will work with. The NT has so far listed:
1 STBA (Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance);
2 ASBP (Alliance of Sustainable Building Products);
3 Heritage Lighting (now part of European Lamp Group); &
4 Hemcrete Projects
GBE have ambitions to work with STBA to enhance the Knowledge Wheel with Solutions and Solutions providers linking the two websites so as not to duplicate nor erode the strength of either.
GBE have been a member of the group that became ASBP for the 3 years before formalization into ASBP and GBE supports the ongoing actions of ASBP by disseminating its outputs.
GBE knows Lime Technology and of Hempcrete and Hemp products in the market and their properties
Is this project something that GreenSpec would like to engage with? I would welcome your thoughts on this. Thank you.
GBE (not GreenSpec) are very interested in participating on the INSURE project, have recent first hand Interreg experience and offer some knowhow in dissemination of information to a wider audience.
My previous website had 1.8m page views in 2 years whilst the new website is 3 months old, too early to report.
GBE has an ambition to build a 3D building model interface to interrogate the encyclopaedia; with a mouse click on any part of the model and the interface delivers all relevant information to the screen windows.
