Environmental Technology Lectures in Architectural Education

A proposal for a environmental technology lecture series and assignments through Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Alumni CPD.
With suggested lecture with suggested content and assignment titles.

Students could be doing better than this

  • I have recently completed the marking of Part 2 student’s assignments following a 12 week lecture series.
  • I am worried by a number of students who where well below the pass mark and significant number just above it.
  • I have detected that some weaker students at Part 2 level seem to have a lack of basic understanding of materials, and construction techniques let alone brief development, site analysis, building performance, servicing strategies, construction methods, material and so their weekly assignments suffers from woolly thinking or lack any substance.
  • I still see considerable misunderstanding of basic principles and need them to engage more robustly with jargon busting definitions and sustainability checklists.
  • From time to time I have to stop seminars and cover topics that they should have already mastered in earlier years of their training.
  • I have also been informed by the some stronger students, that they have really appreciated and benefited from the lecture series provided and assignments set at Part 2 Year 1
  • Weekly assignments have given them the opportunity to interrogate subjects in some depth increasing their understanding of each subject significantly.
  • The apparent lack of know-how or late acquisition of skills must reflect in their studio work.
  • Seeing the outputs in the assignments I am sure this know-how is reflected in their studio work, whether the student is weak or strong.
  • I will always argue that without my basic understanding of the nuts and bolts of building I could not have been able to ‘fly kites’ in studio.
  • I am convinced the studio work could benefit substantially from more technology input from an earlier stage and throughout the courses.

I would like to see comprehensive and continuous technology input:

  • I would like to see more of the students acquiring better understanding of a wider range of joined up topics and develop the ability to fuse it all together to produce more competent studio designs.
  • But I fear this can only be achieved if they receive a comprehensive series of complimentary seminars throughout Part 1 & 2 and possibly Part 3.
  • I would like to offer that comprehensive lecture series all the way through the architectural course to try to arm the students with these basic understandings at the right time and building to a comprehensive set of skills.
  • I would like to liaise via a brainstorming session with other faculty staff to develop the right list of subjects in the right years and at the right time to support studio.

Future Facing Climate Aware Competent Students

  • I am keen students have a thorough understanding of and be able to compare and contrast Historic, Current, Modern and Innovative Methods of Construction;
    • learn from and share with the foreign national students climate specific methods from across the world.
  • I want to ensure students have a competent working knowledge of briefing process, building design, building technology, materials, building services all reinforced with a core grounding in environmental responsibility.
  • I want the students to be able to carryout critical analysis of other’s construction and an ability to apply and fuse this knowledge to their own invented systems.
  • I also want to prepare our students to work with existing buildings as this may well form a core component of their future workload; conserving, maintaining, upgrading, repurposing or recladding them for the changing climate.
  • I would want to ensure students who wish to, are capable of responding to the Self-Build market, responding to the specific needs of these clients to provide appropriate technological solutions for an unskilled client, project manager and builder.

A lecture series and assignment programme:

  • I would aim to create a lecture series and assignment programme:
  • To prepare the students in a way that is closer to that expected of doctors: competency from the outset and not reliant upon hours of CPD and office based learning to become really useful.

Such a lecture series could:

  • Be available to:
    • Part 1 Degree ,
    • Part 2 Post Graduate Diploma
    • Post Graduate Masters
    • Part 3 Professional Practice
    • CPD Continuing Professional Practice
  • Inform all students (at the very least on the following)
    • Environment,
    • Materials,
    • Construction Technology,
    • Services
    • Professional practice
  • Address topics as far as wide as possible (See detailed lists below)
  • Be realistic, practical, comprehensive and joined up
  • Help the students to engage more intelligently and enthusiastically with:
    • Understanding problems and solving not avoiding them
    • Conventional and Environmental everything
    • Lectures that support their Studio work
  • Avoid design tutors having to take time out to fill gaps in the students tech know-how
    • Support all design studios with technology and environmental input reinforcing their projects
    • Enable Design Tutors to focus their students on Philosophy, Graphics and Design
    • Taking pressure off the tutors to deliver Technology
  • Develop a new cohort of better informed more employable students with environmental awareness
    • In many cases students could be better informed than their employers
    • But with knowledge to enable them to pursue changes in working practices
  • Attract the attention of future students to be drawn to the course
    • Help increase course recruitment numbers
    • Help the course rise up the league table

Such a Lecture Series would:

  • Learn from current EU wide research as observers and users of their tools and websites
  • Parallel and integrated with the Studio to reinforce each other’s inputs and outputs
  • Deliver material relevant to students design projects to deliver better designs
  • Supporting all students in their design processes and bringing some rationale to their choices of construction, materials and services.
  • Introduce industry experts to bring in depth knowledge on all topics
  • Introduce a range of topics that the students can explore in their own capacities.

My track record:

  • I have previously provided seminars at Part 1 Year 2, Part 2 Year 1 at LSBU and Part 3 lectures and MSc level training at other Universities to build upon.
  • I have previously developed and delivered:
    • 10 two hour lectures on building elements, Part 1
    • 10 two hour lectures from EREID, Part 2
    • 20 homework assignment papers and supporting presentations
  • I also have created over 1000 CPD seminars to pick from and develop.
  • I can offer to develop a lecture series on all the right subjects in the right years and to suit the RIBA syllabus.
  • I would like to offer at least the following as core subjects, but can offer many more (See later detailed lists):
    • Site, Materials, Construction & Resource Efficiency
    • Health, Wellbeing and Environment,
    • Services, Energy & Carbon

I believe I could create and deliver such a lecture series

  • Supported occasionally by additional specialists from the green world and from industry.
