Website Update: Tasks & Instructions

Green Building Encyclopaedia

Background

  • Having created a successful website from 2012 onwards and converted 1750 pages in 2015 from Concrete 5 format to a more up to date WordPress format, the website’s popularity has plummeted from greater than 2500 page views per day to 50 per day.
  • WordPress is designed to maximize exposure to Google by Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), whilst Concrete 5 did not engage with SEO at all, so the old pages are devoid of all SEO capability.
  • Google no longer sees the new site as one to promote
  • So changes need to occur on most of the >2000 pages to improve SEO
  • We know what changes are needed it just takes a long time to do them all to many pages
  • >900 pages have been updated so far, but lessons learned along the way need to be reapplied to all of the pages eventually
  • I have been working on it for 15 months in between jobs but need to step up a gear to update all the remaining pages.
  • I am now working on the website again between other tasks.

Is it all worth while?

  • I have just received the 16th award for the website or for my position in the sector.
  • Recent award categories I particularly like are ‘Behaviour Change’ and ‘Game Changer’
  • So the media seem to understand what the website is trying to do.
  • We just need to get the site fixed to get Google’s support and rebuild our traffic statistics.

Building funds to keep this going

  • There is enough work to keep somebody busy for a year
  • I will start a crowd fund campaign to see if this can be funded along with development of the other ambitions
  • My reward is potentially watching the SEO scores improve leading to the difference made in Google Analytics statistics as your updates make a difference.

What is needed?

  • I need the website pages updating following very precise instruction that I have started writing up on paper in this file
  • I will also do a demonstration, one to one training and coaching to explain the reasoning for the changes, the process, the risks, precautions and my current best sequences, in detail.

TASK 1 Deleting most of 1600 comments (Completed)

Simple, repetitive, boring, fast (This may only be an hour’s work)

Sign in (as above)

You arrive at ‘Dashboard’

Black Menu column at left

Scroll down to Comments and click

Click on 1869 Posts

You arrive on ‘Posts’ (all Posts)

Deleting most of 1600 comments (those which are Hyperlinks from a redundant website)

In this case the ‘delete-action’ is to ‘add to Bin’

https://greenbuildingencyclopaedia.uk/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=approved&paged=17

Starting on page 17 and work back towards half way down Page 2

All comments from greenbuildingencyclopaedia.uk.gridhosted.co.uk/un…… gridhosted is the clue

If the item has grid hosted in the left column then it can be consigned to the Bin

A second clue is the middle column text starts and ends with […]

If the item has […] in the middle column then it can be consigned to the Bin

Bulk Actions:

Tick the left hand tick box for many rows at a time

Then go up to the Bulk Action Button, drop the drop down menu and choose ‘Move to Bin’

Then go to the Apply Button and click it

Individual Action:

Hover over the text in the centre column and 6 actions appear the 6th is Bin choose Bin

Later there may be a new task to reintroduce and modify these

TASK 2 Reformat existing Posts and Pages

(Ben original 1st Task now relegated to 3rd task)

Fiddly, similar tasks on each Post and Page, a few different tasks on each Post and Page

(best all done in one go but I have split some tasks out, they are now following this one)

When you get completely comfortable with this, you can combine this Task with other Tasks to make the job more interesting

(initially guess 1 hour each page, less say 15-30 minutes, as you get proficient)

(potentially 250-500 Hours)

(I have found a new trick to make part of the process simpler)

Reformat existing pages (that are still in Concrete 5 Format including frames)

* Some of the >1900 Posts are already done (Pages are different to Posts but have lots of similarities)

* Tag ‘%%%’ in Post footers can be used as a search function and will find some Posts that are not converted and identified as such

* There are many others not tagged ‘%%%’

* Need to convert ‘Frames’ (consisting of a top bar and 3 columns below) from Concrete 5 Posts to the equivalent ‘Blocks’ in same format in WordPress

Reason for change:

* Frames stay as a frame and get squashed on screens of Smart phones and tablets with very narrow columns of text

* Blocks remain wide and line up one after the others as you scroll down a Post or a Page

Instructions:

* Log in (as above)

* You arrive at ‘Dashboard’

* Black Menu column at left

* Scroll down to Posts > Posts All and click

* You arrive on 1897 ‘Posts’ (all Posts)

* To choose a Post to work on, go to white row first item ‘Title’ hover near title and an arrow will appear next to it, click it and wait, click and wait again until you see ‘#1757: …….’ is the first item in the list below

* Scroll down to ‘1004: ……’ and this shall be your first Post to edit

* Do the same each time and work your way down the list

* When you complete Post 1398 there are 9 more lists of Posts to process

Typical NGS website page in concrete 5 layout is controlled by frames

1 Top bar frame

2 Left column bottom frame

3 Middle column bottom frame

4 Right column bottom frame

* Copy and paste content of 4 frames

* (frames are tables made of double dashed lines, mostly 1 top row and 3 columns below)

* One cell at a time,

* Do not try ‘drag and drop’, it crashes the page and undoes all the work you did before on that page

* (But it automatically reopens the page and you might think everything is okay, its not)

* Paste them into the white space above the frames one at a time, leave a gap between so its easier to see the 4 parts

* Collect the top row first, first column second, second column third and third column fourth

* Top row and 3 columns need to be ‘copy and paste’ (Command C then Command V)

* If you cannot see the content of any of the columns (their content is centered vertically) click in the column and use down arrow to get to the second line of the text (avoids scrolling down to search) select the whole of the text in one column at a time.

* (If you veer off the column it will grab the adjacent column too)

* Copy and paste them into the white space, above the frames,

* each one below the previous (always above the frames)

* leaving an empty row or gap between each Block of text (Return Return)

* Once all the 4 pieces of information are pasted, you can delete the now redundant frames and their content

First save the page as a precaution.

* Right hand side of screen in a 4th column top of screen or some way down there are 2 blue ‘Update buttons’ press the lower one and wait.

* The Top URL box will show an updating blue line, it may take time, when it is complete the page refreshes and the changes have gone live on the website.

Delete the old ‘frame’ and its text content:

* Find the frame by scrolling down until you see the double dotted line creating a top bar and three columns below

* Move the mouse to the right hand side of the third (right) column.

* Click in the narrow white space to the right of the frame to the left of the slide bar

* A thin black line appears, It is the side of a box around the whole frame, allowing you to edit the whole frame

* Use the back space to delete the frame

* Check to see if there is any spare white space, back space back to the end of the last line of text

Next step:

* If you can see a blue button with Classic Mode then you are in the right Mode

* If you can see a blue button with Page Builder then you need to press it to get to the other mode

* You will see Visual Composer at the head of the white area.

* The text you just moved from frames to page are now in a Block with a grey border with various editing icons around its edges.

* Below Visual Composer are two icons:

* Plus (add another Block) ‘Add Block Button’

* a Black Square with White Tee ‘Template Button’ (add templates with different ready made Blocks)

* Now using the Template Button, click to reveal A blue topped Pop-up called ‘Templates’ with single tab ‘My Templates’ and a subtitle ‘My Templates’ with a long list of template names.

* Scroll down to 8th item ‘GBE 3 Column No Top Rapid Development Template’ and choose it

* The pop-up will disappears after a few seconds and the action is carried out for you.

* Scroll down to the bottom of the text you previously assembled in the page that is now in a Block.

* You will see 3 new small empty Blocks below the first Block each with some editing icons in or around its grey border.

* The plan is to reassemble the 4 frames worth of information into the 4 (1st + 3 added) Blocks.

Editing:

* Touch the content of the top Block and a green pop-up set of editing icons appear

* Choose the second item ‘pencil’ (Pop-up text: ‘Edit text Block’)

* A Blue topped editing window appears ‘Text Block Settings’ White Tab ‘General’ and a grey bar of editing tools

* Below the grey bar is the white area with the text you assembled in the page (now in the Block).

* Select the text from the third row to the bottom (leaving 2 rows unselected)

* Command C the selected text

* Delete the selected text

* Remove the empty line by back spacing to the end of the bold Page title

* (take care not to delete the last letters of the title)

Save Changes button

* the blue topped box disappears and the top Block has only got the 2 rows of information in it

* Click in the white area of 1st new Block (left of the three side-by-side Blocks)

* A Green editing pop-up set of editing icons appears (as before)

* choose the pencil to reveal its editing window (as before)

* The cursor is highlighted flashing in the white editing area

* Command V to past the Block of text (from three columns in fields of the original page)

* Now scroll down to find and select the second and third column text (starts with the page title and ‘Images:’ scroll to the bottom) and copy, delete highlighted, remove empty lines, ‘Save changes’, window disappears

* Choose the central Block and open as before, paste as before,

* Select the text in the central Block for the third Block (starts with the page title and ‘See Also:’ scroll to the bottom) and copy, delete highlighted, remove empty lines, ‘Save Changes’, window disappears.

* Three Columns are now populated.

* Right hand side of screen in a 4th column top of screen or some way down there are 2 blue ‘Update buttons’

* press the lower one and wait.

* The Top URL box will show an updating blue line, it may take time, when it is complete the page refreshes and the changes have gone live on the website.

*

Job almost done:

* Scroll down the 4th column to Tags, next to the Add button there is an edit box:

* Add four pieces of information in one action: ‘02/04/17, ‘BT’ (for Ben), ‘ECH’ (for Emily), ‘BRM’ (for BrianSpecMan), %%%, Task 2’

* (separate with comma and gap)

* NB date in 02/04/17 format

* press Add Button

* All four should appear below, check they did,

* Click ‘Save changes’ to the Block

* Click ‘Update’ to save the Page or Post to the website

* View page, check all is as required, if not reopen and correct and recheck until done

All done

* In future when you need to go back to these pages to carryout a different task:

* Using Login > Dashboard > Posts > All Posts, Title

* scroll down to row titled ‘1004: ……’

Disappearing %%% and dates

* After you have edited the Posts with Task 2

* If and when I have time I will go in to tidy up layout or finish off any loose ends

* If I have not then I will leave them for you for later and leave the %%% in

* I will go in to the Post and make any changes I will add my edit date and delete your last edit date

TASK 3 Improve SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in exiting Posts and Pages

(Emily 1st task)

Not simple, similar tasks on each page, lots of different tasks on each page (better all done in one go), needs carefulness, up to an hour per page (BrianSpecMan’s time when editing words as well)

If the multiple task is too much to cope with then choose some tasks and separate out as another task (work out which order they need to be done in, with BrianSpecMan, and new instructions can be written.

Add %%% to the Tags of each page indicating only part completed needing more doing to it

Improve SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in exiting pages

(SEO is non-existent in Concrete 5 and essential in WordPress)

The current site is made up of 2008 webpage including 1910 Posts (content) and 98 Pages (navigation)

938 Posts do not have Focus Keywords (no SEO information so not scored by or promoted by Google)

* (some deliberately so e.g. University students lecture course pages not visible to Google, students know the URL)

0 SEO Score: Bad

353 SEO Score: Okay [if ( ) in page title usually achieves orange]

618 SEO Score: Good

Objective: improve grey to green (but the page content may prevent better than orange) and avoid red if possible

If your actions get to red BrianSpecMan will edit the post or page content to get to Orange or Green

You arrive at ‘Dashboard’

Scroll down to ‘At a Glance’ in the white area

Click on 1910 Posts

You arrive on ‘Posts’

Task 3.0 Choose Post to edit

* See row of drop down menus and buttons

* Go to All SEO Scores, click once to engage, second time to drop menu,

* scroll down to ‘SEO: No Focus Keyword’ choose, then press ‘filter button’

* The published list of 1897 is reduced to 1007 items over 6 pages

* Under the SEO column they are all Grey

* There is a list of Posts, choose the first Post and click to open

Being more selective:

* Ignore Posts that mention page views or webstats (they refer to the old web site and are misleading here)

* Ignore News announcements (they are old news and belong on the old website)

* The old website will be rekindled and renamed and we will build Hyperlinks between the two websites

* Some pages will be omitted from each website

Task 3.1 Post title

Task 3.1.1 Post numbers:

* Need to move any numbers from beginning (left) to end (right) of the title (drag and drop possible)

* Include Post page number of new site (G#15748) first then old site (N#1245) at end of title

* If there is a lone number e.g. 1245 at the beginning of the title then it is the old site page number,

* add N# in front of the number, no gap

* Get the new page number from the URL box at top of window, (5 figures), add at end of title (before N#)

* add G# in front of Post number, no gap

* If there is no old page number then get the new site Post number only, from the URL box at top of window

Task 3.1.2 Post groups:

* Post Groups Include:

* Navigation, CPD, Lecture, Jargon Buster, Issue paper, Specification, Checklist, Code, Defects, Q&A, Calculator, RSWS, RSC, RSGN, many more to add by BrianSpecMan

* Put these Post Groups into brackets CPD > (CPD) Lecture > (Lecture)

* Move the Bracketed Post groups to middle (left of page numbers)

Task 3.1.3 Post title:

* Tidy up any gaps (white space) at left and right and any double (or more) gaps in Post title

* BrianSpecMan to review words of title after Task 3.2 or BrianSpecMan to provide a list in advance of Ben/Emily actions

Task 3.2 URL Slug update (slug is the text between any pair of slashes) e.g. /products-on-file/

* Permalink is under the Post title box

* It is blue hypertext URL for the Post, the last slug is for this Post it is highlighted

* At the right is an ‘Edit Button’ press to edit the slug,

* A slug edit box opens with the existing last slug in it

* Copy the first 2/3 of the Post Name (Post Name and (Bracketed Page Group)) (minus the G#…..N#…..)

* Paste into the slug edit box overwriting the existing (check that the existing is deleted)

* Press Ok button

* The programme will automatically: reduce capitals to lower case, turn gaps into -, remove symbol including brackets

* If you wish to you can do that manually but it’s a waste of time and risks typing errors

* Check the spelling corrector has not changed gbe- to be- or bb- or bbe- change it back to gbe-

Save the page as a precaution.

* Right hand side of screen in a 4th column top of screen or some way down there are 2 blue ‘Update buttons’ press the lower one (not the top one) and wait for the Post to refresh

* The Top URL box will show an updating blue line, it may take time, when it is complete the page refreshes and the changes have gone live on the website.

Task 3.3 Top Block Page numbers

* Copy G#15748 N#1245 from page title and paste to end of first row in the top Block

* (No Comma , and no right arrow > between numbers)

* All done

Task 3.4 Editing the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Getting good Google rankings

Introduction:

* Scroll towards the bottom of the page to 2nd box from top or 4th box from the bottom ‘Yeost SEO’

* You will see at the top two circles (traffic lights)

* The first is ‘Readability’: Grey Red Amber or Green lights (ignore this)

* The mast majority of my content is staccato, bulletted lists, so readability is often low

* The second is ‘Enter your Focus Keyword’: Grey light

* We want to get this to Green at best and Amber at worst by changing the content of the snippets (below)

* Scroll down to bottom of the Yeost SEO window

* There are 3 or 4 groups (with hidden sub items that can be expanded by clicking + sign to show)

* You will see a number of different coloured traffic lights (mostly red some amber and few green)

* The ambition is to reduce the number of reds and ambers, increase the number of greens avoid any greys

* Each one has a comment which the next actions should address to some extent

* There are four edit boxes above which must all contain the same ‘Focus Keywords’ and three of then can/must contain other information.

* With the right information in each edit box more lights appear and more turn green

* Some of the traffic lit comments prompt for other actions including:

* adding pictures and adding alt-text to the picture (See Task 10)

Instructions:

* The following assumed there is no existing text in the 4 editing boxes (1007 pages this should be true)

* If there is existing text do nothing and put %%%%%% (6 x %) in the tag box later

* If not exiting text exists carry on

* Go to the top of the Post to the Post Title Window

* Highlight and Copy all three parts (Post Title, (Page Group) and G#…N#….)

* Scroll down to the Yeost SEO window

* Find the Focus Keywork edit box, click in and paste the Post Titles

* Now scroll up to find Edit Snippet Button, click to reveal 3 edit boxes SEO title, URL, Meta Description

* Do not do anything to URL yet

* Click in 2 of them: SEO title and Meta Description and paste into each the Post Title

* Now we have to edit each of the 4 in different ways

SEO title:

* Remove: brackets ( & ) leaving the text,

* Delete: G#….N#…..,

* Add: ‘ – Green Building Encyclopaedia’

* It should read something like:

* GBE Materials – Green Building Encyclopaedia

* The line below will be changing colour as you edit (red is worst, green is best)

* If the line is amber add GBE after Green Building Encyclopaedia

* It should now read something like Materials – Green Building Encyclopaedia GBE

* The line should be green in all but exceptionally short or long Post names.

URL:

* This is the last slug of the URL for this Post only

* The slug here is exactly the same as the editable slug at the top of the page (Task 3.2)

* Change one and the other changes too

* Check that the slug is only the Post Title (first 1/3 of the information pasted into 3 other edit boxes)

* If they start with GBE check it is still gbe- and not automatically editied to bbe- or be- etc. in this edit box.

Meta Description:

* Remove: brackets from the Post Group ( & ) leaving the text,

* This needs commas adding between specific parts:

* Add comma after the Post Group,

* Add commas after the Post Numbers G#12345, N#1234,

* Copy Green Building Encyclopaedia GBE from SEO Title edit box to after N#1234,

* Add comma after Encyclopaedia and after GBE

* It should no read something like GBE Timber Materials, G#12345, N#1234, Green Building Encyclopaedia, GBE,

* BrianSpecMan will add other Keywords and Tags separated by comma and gap later (, )

* Your initials at the bottom of Blocks and in the tags, %%%%%% or %%% will all prompt me to look.

Focus Keywork

* Delete last 1/3 of the information pasted here (G#12345 N#1234)

* Remove: brackets from the Post Group ( & ) leaving the text,

* Keeping Post Title and Post Group

* If you pasted GBE Timber (Materials) G#12345 N#1234 it should now look like ‘GBE Timber Materials’

Task 3.5 Updating Tags

* Go back up to Meta Description

* Copy the content of the editing box

* Something like: ‘GBE Timber Materials, G#12345, N#1234, Green Building Encyclopaedia, GBE,’

* Scroll up to the Tags box in the 4th right column

* Click the edit box and paste (Command V in apple, shift insert in some PCs)

* Scroll up to the lower of the 2 Update Buttons in the 4th column right hand of the page and Click button

Task 3.6 Job almost done:

* Scroll down the 4th column to Tags, next to the Add button there is an edit box:

TASK 6 Convert White text to pale Grey

(Ben High Priority new 1st task)

Simple, Repetitive, different in each page, not all pages have them, every Page and Post needs checking

Carryout with task 18

Introduction

White text on white background (invisible)

* Google thinks the website is trying to hide something from Google and from users; and downgrades the site ranking

* Historically some websites filled a page with a keyword many times and made them white on white thinking it would increase its visibility to Google,

* Google also looks at keyword density, (the number of times the keyword occurs compared to the total number of words on the page) and sets upper and lower density limits.

* If you exceed these limits you get marked down in Google rankings.

* Some of this website text is white on white to hide it, so as to be non-distracting to readers,

* (but put there by me for me, for speed in hyper-linking pages, I know where and how to find it)

* Google thinks I am hiding something

* So the white text needs to be converted to pale grey (3rd down on right of colour pallet)

* Mostly in lists in column 1 & 3 but may also be in column 2 of both Posts and Pages

* Pages are mostly navigation pages and have many lists in columns (not normally in the top bars)

* Posts are topic pages and also have lists in the columns mostly in the right column but can be in any column

Instructions:

* Instruction that follow assume you have got into the Block editing box

* Three Column Blocks: (also 1 column Posts and 2 column Post)

* Select all text in a Block one Block at a time (Columns 1, 2 then 3) this will highlight invisible (white) text, scroll up or down to see them all

* Convert white text on white background (invisible) to grey text on white background (visible)

* Highlight white text choose pale grey text (3rd down on right of colour pallet)

* Repeat until all white text is grey

* Click ‘Save changes’ to the Block

TASK 7 %%% Categorize Page, Building Site Map and Improving URL

(Emily 1st Task)

Not easy, without a full site map list (such a list exists but it needs updating) unless I give the right Categories first

With a site map can be simple but slow

Introduction:

* During conversion from old site to new all pages were dumped in the same un-categorise folder, losing the old site URL slugs and the ‘site map’ or ‘site page hierarchy’

* But all pages keep a page number (hidden in the page metadata) as a constant link.

* If a link exists, but the URL is wrong or missing, it uses the page number to find the page even if you linked using the long URL

* When a page is added to a new place in the site map the link is maintained by the number but the Long URL needs updating

* All URL Hyperlinks need to be checked and if wrong corrected

* If a correct link can not be made the faulty link needs to be turned off

Task 7.1

* The ‘Site map’ lists all the page for Google to analyze

* It is missing and it needs to be updated frequently during the upgrading

* BrianSpecMan will address this with Ben Temple at WordPressNoStress

Task 7.2

* All Hyperlinks need checking and if needed updating

TASK 18 Hyperlinks: Check all, break bad, refresh and create new Hyperlinks

(Ben 2nd Task)

Easy, repetitive, fast, similar tasks on each page, 5 – 15 minutes to check and disconnect bad connections and up to 60 minutes per page to rebuild Hyperlinks, all 98 Pages and 1910 Posts need checking (potentially 2000 hours or 1.25 years)

Carryout with task 6

Introduction:

* Pages are primarily ‘navigating the website pages’ and populated with Hyperlinks in the headers and the columns

* Posts are primarily ‘website content pages’ with Hyperlinks in text and Hyperlinks in the right hand ‘See Also’ column

* When the website was converted from Concrete 5 to WordPress 4 all the Page and Post URLs were reduced to website address/one ‘uncategorized’ slug/and original page name

* Rebuilding the new Website Site Map and the Pages and Post Hierarchy creates new URL for the Pages and Posts

* Concrete 5 Pages also had a unique ‘page number’ e.g. N#1234

* WordPress Pages and Posts also have a different unique ‘page number’ e.g. G#16700

* ‘Page numbers’ are stored in a hidden table that Hyperlinks the old ‘uncategorised URL’ and the new ‘long multi-slugged URL’ to the ‘page number’ and ‘Short page number URLs’

* Hyperlinks using the ‘Short page number URL’ remain valid and should be used as much as possible in rebuilding Hyperlinks

* Hyperlinks using the ‘uncategorised URL’ may not link to the relocated Pages or Posts

* A ‘short URL’ with the ‘page number’ will get you to the same Page or Post as its ‘long multi-slugged URL’

* In the process of rebuilding ‘long URLs’ Pages or Posts that do not use the ‘Short page number URL’ the Hyperlinks are broken and the Hyperlinks need to be disconnected and reconnected.

Instructions

* Instructions that follow assume you have logged in, selected and opened the Page or Post, selected and opened the Block editing box

18.1 Navigation Page Top Line Hyperlinks

* Top Block Top Line Page group ‘Slugs’

* GBE > Encyclopaedia > Files > CPD > G#12345 N#1234

* The underlined text mimics the Slugs of the URL and allows users to go back up the site map via (Navigation) pages

18.2 Checking Hyperlinks

* Start with 97 Pages (many Hyper links) then 1897 Posts (less Hyperlinks each)

* Each blue underlined word or phrase is a link usually to a ‘navigation page’, in that navigation page, the title should include Navigation or (Navigation) if it does not its may be a bad link that needs updating or the navigation page needs updating (Most navigation pages are up to date already) but that needs checking

* In ‘view the page’ mode, click a link and the linked page opens

* In ‘edit the page’ mode, click a link and the link page appears

* In ‘edit a Block mode’, click a link, a pop-up box appears,

* The pop-up contains: ‘long URL’ showing first and last slugs, ‘edit pencil icon’ and ‘break link icon’

18.3 Breaking bad Hyperlinks

* The if the hyperlink is ‘About’ the ‘long URL’ should have its last slug as ‘/about-navigation’

* If not then the link should be broken

* If it is not ‘about-navigation’, then close that Page or Post, coming back to the first Page or Post, disconnect the link using the ‘break link icon’ in the pop-up box, click icon and blue underlined text should revert to plain black text

* Repeat until all Hyperlinks are checked and they are either okay or unlinked

* Every hyperlink on a Page and a Post can be checked and any that appear incorrect can be broken

* Click ‘Save changes’ to the Block

* Click ‘Update’ to save the Page or Post to the website

18.4 Refreshing Hyperlinks

I suggest carrying out task 18 and 6 at the same time

Instructions:

* On any Page click on any Hyperlink

* In the Page or Post you land in

* Copy (Command+C) the title at the top of the Page or Post (the largest Font and Style H1) it may be spread over 1, 2 or more lines

* Close the Page or Post and return to the Page or Post with the Hyperlink

* In the same row as the Hyperlink and at the right hand end, type a space and then edit link (Command+K)

* A pop-up box will appear, paste (Apple Command+V) the title into the box,

* the search function will whirr and deliver a drop down menu of page titles that closest match the paste content,

* the top one should be a complete match.

* If it is a complete match choose it and then press the blue button with white enter arrow to the right

* The text should now be a hyperlink in blue underlined text

* If not then repeat the action but make sure you press the blue button with the white enter arrow

* Next step is to change the format

Required Format:

* Title of the Page or Post (Blue underlined hyperlink)

* (Bracketed Page Group) (in dark grey = top right of the colour pallet)

* Page Number(s) (in pale grey = third down at right of colour pallet)

* Example: Tree Houses (Project) G#12345 N#6789

* Change to: Tree House (Project) G#12345 N#6789

Instructions:

Page Numbers:

* In a Block of a Page or Post go to the Hyperlink, click and scroll over text to highlight and engage Page or Post numbers G#12345 N#6789 the Hyperlink drop down menu will open, press the ‘break link icon’

* The text will change to G#12345 N#6789

* Whilst the text is still engaged change the font colour to pale grey

* Go to the two rows of editing icons, second row, third from the left ‘Text colour’ icon and choose the right hand end third row down light grey, the text should now appear as G#12345 N#6789.

Instructions:

Groups:

* In a Block of a Page or Post go to the Hyperlink, click and scroll over text to highlight and engage Page or Post Page Group ‘(Project)’ the Hyperlink drop down menu will open, press the ‘break link icon’

* The text will change to ‘(Project)’

* Whilst the text is still engaged check the font colour is dark grey and/or change the font colour to dark grey

* Go to the two rows of editing icons, second row, third from the left ‘Text colour’ icon and choose the right hand end top row dark grey, the text should now appear as ‘(Project)’.

18.4 Creating new Hyperlinks

* Double Click on a proposed whole word hyperlink to engage the whole word

* If the proposed hyperlink is more than one word use the mouse pointer to scroll across and engage the phrase

* Copy the word or phrase (Command+C in Apple)

* Go to the two rows of editing icons above in grey border, top row, click third from right ‘chain link icon’

* Or use Command + K (linK) to get to the same place

* Paste word or phrase into ‘paste URL or type to search’ box in pop-up box (Command + V)

* After the word or phrase you pasted type ‘ nav’ (short for navigation)

* The search function whirs and delivers a drop down list of 6-7 Page titles or Post titles with dates

* The closest match title will be at the top of the list, then non-matching in recent-first date-order

* (If you type nothing into the box it lists Pages and Posts non-matching in recent-first date-order)

* If it appears to be the right page title, choose it in the list, then click the ‘enter’ white arrow on blue button to the right

* If not scroll down list to the best match, then choose and click

* The pasted text changes to the page’s ‘long URL’ and the proposed hyperlink becomes a blue underlined hyperlink

* If a best batch cannot be found then leave them unlinked, they will be obvious to BrianSpecMan to inspect and link

* Click ‘Save changes’ to the Block

* Click ‘Update’ to save the Page or Post to the website

18.5 Other Hyperlinks within ‘Block’ texts or in right hand ‘See Also’ ‘Block’ column lists and footers of ‘Blocks’

The Hyperlinks are altogether different

18.6 Leave a record

Go to every Block, one at a time, where you have made changes

In ‘edit mode’ go to the footer and update the second date to today’s date

Format: ‘2nd September 2018’

It there is only one date it is the date the Page or Post was created and there have been no revisions so far

GBE has many spreadsheets of products and there are many websites with more.

There are many GBE spreadsheets of products and materials that have varying columns/row orders

The spreadsheets need to be merged before anything useful can be done with them

This task needs to build around Task 20 Product Data Collection columns and row order

GBE has numerous readymade drop down menus which can be integrated to enable faster development of consistent cell content

Many more drop down menus can be developed

Drop down menus with a full compliment of application codes can be written and integrated.

Task +2 GBE Product Data Collection is a service GBE offer to manufacturers

The output of task +1 needs to be robustly built around task +2 column and row orders

GBE collect information on any product to fill up to say 1270 cells that then regenerates up to say 35 different subsets

Each Subset generates a different output: e.g.

* GBE Product Data Sheet

* GBE Robust Specification

* GBE Method Statement

Each output is separate service that is offered to manufacturers and suppliers of these products

Task +3 Interrogation of product data into calculators

The aim is to be able to shortlist suitable products, choose one and deploy their properties into calculators

I wish to be able to filter/sift/sort through these using column content filters to be able to short list appropriate products against multiple properties

There are many more columns than can be added to enable more intelligent searches.

E.g. Application codes that show where in a building the product has been designed for use in.

The content can be used to develop look up tables for calculator applications.

Task +4 Integrate product data with whole building calculators

Enable integration with whole building calculators to enable appropriate choice of components and whole building applications of calculations.

GBE Studio currently had 892 elemental assemblies of components or materials to choose from in look up tables

Elemental assemblies: floor, roof, wall, stair, windows, pavement, fence, etc.

Components: bricks, timber stud or joist, plywood, plasterboard, plaster, paint, etc.

Materials: Softwood, Concrete, cement, steel, Polypropylene

Products: Fletton common brick, Gyproc wallboard, Dulux Ecosure,

The components can be replaced by materials or products from the spreadsheet

Each materials or product chosen will come with their own properties from look up tables to populate cells.

The aim is for the calculators can interrogate the datasets, collect data and carryout calculations with them.
