About:
Whilst worrking with BRE Waste & Resource Efficiency team it became clear that they had the waste statistics but the industry at large were not engaged in waste segregation unless they have an obligation to do so.
BrianSpecMan of NGS was working with UKCEED, Environment Agency, ConstructingExcellence, Keir Construction, Simons of Lincoln, BRE and WRAP developing and delivering over 40 SWMP Site Waste Management Plan workshops across the UK to many mixed audiences.
Simons presented a case study showing how with different material waste streams being segregated on their constuction sites they could make considerable savings on waste skips and landfill costs.
Over a weekend BrianSpecMan brought BRE waste statistics and Simons waste costs data together to create WasteCost(R) lite calculator, that takes minites to populate and less than a second to get results.
Aims and ambitions
The aim was to get Quantitiy Surveyors and Constructor’s Buying Departments beyond the first question to the more important answers to 3 or 4 questions:
- How much are we paying for waste disposal?
- How much will waste segregation cost us? (Usual reaction: Okay we won’t bother then)
- How much money will waste segregation save us?
- How much money will they pay us for the metals?
This tool demonstrates roughly spend £10,000 to save £100,000
In the case of demolition v deconstruction (this needs its own calculator using BioRegional published data)
- Give them a month and they will charge £100,000 to demolish
- Give them 2 months to deconstruct and they will give you £100,000 for the reclaimed materials
GreenSpec WasteCost(r) lite has its limitations:
- BRE 2001 waste statistics (pre hazardous waste regulations and pre gypsum segregation)
- New-build only (full version of software could do more)
- only 4 building Construction methods to choose from
- 1 size skip: 8 cuyd skip
- only 10 waste streams segregated (including hazardous and gypsum)
Despite that, it still works
You can adjust default waste stream costs to local current figure.
A more sophisticated version WasteCost(R) Full was created and developed but never completed or released.
Spin-offs
BrianSpecMan handed a copy to BRE and invited them to do the same, 3 years later BRE and WRAP produced their own sophisticated and more accurate versions that take days to populate with project specific data and get results. The QS has already left the building by the time their results are available.
