3RD PARTY
The independent party that carries out an assessment or test of a product without bias or preferential treatment
(NGS BRM ‘11)

3RD PARTY ACCREDITATION
If a manufacturer (1st party) claims it’s product complies with a BS or an industry standard, the purchaser (2nd party) has to trust them to be telling the truth or that they have tested the product themselves to prove it.
If the purchaser takes a sample away and tests it they can reassure themselves but it will cost the purchaser to do so.
If the manufacturer gets an independent testing house (3rd party) to carry out tests on their behalf and lets the purchaser know the results, the purchaser is more likely to be happy to believe the results. In this situation the manufacturer is the first party, the purchaser is the second and the independent test house is the third party.
If the third party is a recognised and approved test house then their tests could lead to some form of certification or accreditation like: BSI Kitemark, SGS Yarsley’s Testguard or BBA Agrément Certificate, ETA, etc.

8 DIGIT CODE
BRE’s Green Guide to Specification adopts 1600 elemental assemblies and assesses their LCA (generically not accurately), each one gets a unique code number that is 8 digits long.
Each element is given a different rating depending upon the building use class, so the unique code number means different things in different places, which is confusing, very unhelpful and potentially erroneous.
BRE will not give permission to 3rd parties to use the codes to enable cross referencing between information sources, contrary to CPI principles promoted by BRE, displaying a profound lack of joined up thinking.

£60k HOUSE
One example of the £60k house prototypes built at the BRE Innovation Park using a MMC in the form of SIPs panels has been estimated to cost £7k to demolish and £40k to dismantle.
Obviously DfD (Design for Disassembly) was not high on their agenda when designing it.
Tommy Walsh famous landscape constructor on TV’s GroundForce, build a £60k house in 60 days in March Cambridgeshire using conventional materials.

$
Resource depletion is expressed in the unit $.
This unit indicates the total cost to society that is caused by the extraction of a resource.
This includes that more limited availability of resources causes their price to rise.
