W21 Projection Checklist
Checklist:

Competency Problems:

  • We have all been there in rooms with too much stray daylight or sunlight, trying to read the slides of the presentation.
  • Worse still in school and higher educations premises pupils and students have to put up with wholly inadequate visual systems everyday
  • Projecting onto painted walls that may be white or have a tint of colour, alters the colour of the reflected image
  • Images not quite in focus
  • Vibration from the projector shaking the projected image

Misunderstandings:

  • In this case multi-functional projection and felt pen board is not clever

Solutions:

  • Every MP and school Architect should be made to sit in the classrooms where the visual systems are failing the pupils due to well sun and day lit rooms
  • Anti-vibration mountings

Consider Appropriateness & Effectiveness:

  • High-pigmentation paint surface so reflected image colour is vibrant and saturated not pale
  • Neutral mid-grey surface so projected white, colour and black have as good a chance of being reflected as vividly and accurately as each other
  • Slide aside whiteboards to reveal purpose made projection surfaces
  • Projection paint surface made for the task
  • Apply projection paint to dedicated screen boards that can be reclaimed and reused, rather than direct to walls

Avoid:

  • Multi functional whiteboard for felt pens with non-absorbant smooth reflective surface also used as a projection screen; they are incompatible, the projected image will always be poor contrast and low saturation
  • White or coloured screens and walls for projection surfaces

Minimise:

  • Excessive stray light in projection rooms
  • Or use Projection Paint
  • See also: Windows, Rooflights, Solar shading, Light shelves, Blinds and Blackout Blinds

Substitute:

  • Don’t compromise, its our population’s education that will be compromised
  • Use Projection paint in place of blinds

Health:

  • Use natural ingredient projection paints
  • Like all paints, do not ingest

Wellbeing:

  • Pupils, students and delegates should not have to squint to see the images projected onto screens
  • Squinting can lead to eye strain and headaches
  • Any distraction or hindrance is not good for concentration and learning

Biodiversity:

  • If creating an outdoor cinema in the vicinity of nesting birds or roosting bats, consider their sleeping patterns and do not risk unlimited fines and imprisonment for disturbance or disruption of bat roots.

Safety:

  • Like all paints do not ingest

Precautionary principle:

Resource Efficiency Issues:

  • Projection paint is expensive so application by roller should avoid saturating the roller by coating its surface only
  • Projection paint can be spray applied with correct equipment
  • Follow manufacturers instruction and videos

Hazardous waste & Deleterious Substances:

  • Use natural ingredient projection paint
  • Warning the black version contains Carbon Black and should be avoided.

Waste statistics:

Waste minimization:

  • Order only the amount that’s needed, calculate requirements, don’t over order and then waste it

End of Life options

  • Apply projection paint to dedicated screen boards that can be reclaimed and reused, rather than to walls

Yardstick:

Maintenance issue:

  • Use the same purpose made projection paints
