BS EN ISO 50001:2011 ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS – REQUIREMENTS WITH GUIDANCE FOR USE
- Specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system, whose purpose is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.
- It specifies requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes and personnel that contribute to energy performance.
- It applies to all variables affecting energy performance that can be monitored and influenced by the organization.
- It does not prescribe specific performance criteria with respect to energy.
- It has been designed to be used independently, but it can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.
- It is applicable to any organization wishing to ensure that it conforms to its stated energy policy and wishing to demonstrate this to others, such conformity being confirmed either by means of self-evaluation and self-declaration of conformity, or by certification of the energy management system by an external organization.
- It also provides, in Annex A, informative guidance on its use.

BS EN ISO 50001 standard demonstrates to others that companies have the systems, processes and controls required for continuous improvement of energy efficiency and sustainable use.
This is not about how green your organisation can become, because it only focuses on energy efficiency
But if it starts you off on a quest to address energy efficiency which will probably lead to carbon reductions, it might lead on to water efficiency, resource efficiency, healthy and reduced emissions as well as greener products or services.
It is complimentary with ISO 9001 Quality Assurance, ISO 14001 Environmental Management, etc.
Envirowise provided a service addressing a full range of organisational efficiency measures, this was taken on by WRAP but WRAP funding for construction sector is gone.
Business Link (as was) was handed the rains to connect business with business resource efficiency advisory agents.
MOBS website helped you to address many of these issues but it was turned off prematurely.
Barbour offer a service starting with an on-line demo of their gap analysis tool and benchmarking where you are, as well as mapping a route through as little or as much as you want to address.
Barbour guides you through energy management accreditation and will help you to use the processes to ensure you are maximising energy efficiency throughout your organisation.
