Osmosis Jargon Buster
About:

  • I kind of understood it was osmosis through a membrane, and electrolytic ions transfer that caused the pressure difference (DG)
  • Statkraft have withdrawn recently and left it to other market players.

Definition:

ChemWiki:

Relevance to Sustainable Construction:

  • Potential Renewable energy source
  • Desalination plant comes with a heavy energy and carbon load
  • Heating water to evaporate off fresh water as water vapour leaving a precipitant of salt that can be used in food and for deicing.
  • Heating water in a controlled fashion can release numerous chemicals individually, some of which have potential as ingredients in building materials (see Biomimicry book)
  • Osmosis is a low energy and carbon alternative, if it can be scaled up
  • It is currently used in small scale equipment for ocean going yachts and powered boats for sea water to fresh water conversion.

Opinion:

  • My guess is this will take 20 years to mature into the mainstream BrianSpecMan

Examples:

  • But there is already a small reverse osmosis water filtration system (completely different application)
