Solutions:
Consider:
Glass See L40
- Exclusion of UV light, use PVB Interlayers in laminated glass
- Best U Values the project can afford, especially on the North face of the building
- U Values of 1.0 W/m2.K and better are achievable
- Use Double Glazed Sealed Units to EN1279-2 and BSI Kitemarked
- Use Low E (Low Emissivity) glass generally
- Use Argon, Pentane or CO2 in cavities
Framing:
- Timber framed curtain walling
- Timber: Hardwood, Heartwood of softwood, Slow grown timber, reclaimed timber
- FSC approved timber sources and timber based materials See Z10
- Recycled content aluminium: See Z11.2
- Uncoated aluminium (but marginally reduces component life)
- Recycling of coated aluminium: See Z3
Avoid:
Glass and Glazing
- Single glazing in all cases
- Double glazing if the project can afford triple glazing
- Double Glazed Sealed Units only offering U Value 2.0 W/m2.K
- Temperature on internal face of glass lower than 17 degrees C
- Condensation on inner face of glass
- Excessive glazing on north face (heat loss in winter)
- Excessive glazing on south and south west face (heat gains in summer, unless it is managed and exploited)
Framing:
- Powder coated and painted aluminium See Z31 and Z30
- CCA (Copper Chrome Arsenic) Treated softwood, See Z12
- PVC framing See Z50
