GBE Compare: PRODUCTS GROUP COMPARISON
L10 Windows
GBE Compare establishes for each product group:
- Key Performance Indicators KPIs
- Environmental Performance Indicators EPIs
- Social Performance Indicators SPI
GBE Compare places the following for Windows:
- Product Competence as the KPI
- Energy performance as the EPI,
- Security as the SPI
GBE Compare collects data on as many products as can be found easily; applies any calculations necessary to determine comparable data.
GBE Compare then calculates averages in each KPI, EPI and SPI to determine average or normal performance and determines which are above and below the average performance.
GBE Compare then compares individual products to determine where and how they are better or worse than the average or normal.
GBE Compare encourage manufacturers to bring their latest product data to improve the collection.

On this occasion GBE Compared:
- >7000 BFRC certified (energy performance A-G labelling) EPI
- >100 Secured by Design accredited SPI
GBE PASS took manufacturer or reviewer declared data
Average or Normal Product or Performance:
On this occasion the averages determined were:
Average material:
PVC window frame
- 79% PVC of 7000 products in UK Market
- (18% Aluminium)
- (3% timber)
Double glazed window,
- (Triple glazed)
BFRC Certificate Average B-C rated
- (>7000 products certified)
- BFRC A rated 43% of products in market
Not BSI Kitemarked (6800 of windows made in the UK)
Not BBA Certified (6800 of windows made in UK)
Not Secured by Design (>100 Secured by Design)
Not Passivhaus accredited (10 Passivhaus accredited)
Not FSC certified timber (
Not WWA member (
Not BWF TWA scheme (
Conclusions:
“It won’t take a lot to be better than average”
BFRC certification is extensive but not comprehensive
- BFRC A rated covers 43% of the BFRC certified market
- There should be no excuses for specifying less than A rated windows
Construction Products Directive and Regulations and Building Regulations require Proper materials
- (200 out of 7000 comply (BSI & BBA))
Government funded projects Code for Sustainable Homes will require Secured by Design
- (>100 out of 7000 comply (SbD)
PVC window sector has standards for window sections and window performance, but little else
WWA & TWA schemes offer comprehensive schemes with broad range of issue,
- GBE Compare commends WWA and BWF TWA schemes
