EU Timber Regulations (EUTR) NEPCon Sourcing Hub
About:
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and others have been doing a great job of sorting out the sustainable plantations from the virgin forests, so we can be sure when specifying tropical hardwood, that we are not destroying endangered species or historic forests.
FSC also put in place Chain of Custody (CoC) to help make sure the wood from those forests was the wood that arrived in the makers yard or even to the site. Now we could be sure we had sustainable wood.
But we needed evidence that wood is not being plundered from the forest or plantations without establishing ownership; or having illegally logged timbers arriving to make stuff for our projects.
After threats of UK unilateral action, European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) came along to fill the gap. However carrying out Due diligence remotely is hard and paper trails are hard to establish, scrutinise and maintain.
Nature, Economy and People Connected (NEPCon) and other Partners stepped in and with EU Life+ funding established a website to take the pain out of EUTR.
They have carried out work to establish the legality of timber from countries across the globe.
They have graded the countries and established a colour grade green being the safest, red the riskiest and transposed the information to a global map, graded country by country.
They have ambitions to establish protocols for adoption within the industry to make the EUTR process pain free and competent.
They have an interest in more than just timber but other produce from the land: Beef, Soya, etc.
