About:

NBC New Build Checklist

BrianSpecMan started the checklist during specification projects as a briefing document to promote alternatives to the design team, it grew progressively larger on each project.

The checklist was added to during environmental consultancy projects to offer greener alternatives to the specified materials, it grew progressively greener on each project.

The checklist was added to whilst lecturing and critiquing students submissions, in many cases misuse of words, misunderstanding of principles and the mixing of principles required feedback to the students, it grew progressively more detailed with each student and year.

The checklist was then added to GreenSpec website where it was intended to act as a basic primer to introduce better environmental choices in conventional construction, new construction methods and sometimes old construction methods with a new twist.

It disappeared in a major update of the GreenSpec website.

It is being brought back into use, updated and broadened in scope and content here in the Green Building Encyclopaedia.

It has two major components:

  • Specification work section (trades and elements) related checklist
    • This is organised in Specification order (CAWS like NBS but with added sections not in NBS)
  • Other issues checklist

Existing Building Checklist: Decent Homes Checklist

This checklist was written out of frustration at the lack of joined up thinking in Goverment expenditure.

1 million properties were refurbished under this sheme to become ‘Decent’ but not ‘Sustainable’, meaning when GreenDeal finally gets underway it will probably undo and redo much of the work done under Decent Homes generating more materials waste and wasted effort.

With the GreenDeal Tsunami just over the horizon this checklist becomes all the more important, so there is a need to bring it online.

And then give it an update.
