BIM Terminology

  • Words like ‘product’ and ‘object’ and ‘component’ and ‘system’ are used very loosely in English.
  • Almost anything physical could be spoken of as a product, or object or component or system.
  • I suspect there are similar problems in German, or any other language.
  • In BIM and in classification we need to use these terms in particular, narrow ways, to avoid confusion.
  • But we will only avoid confusion if everyone understands these narrow definitions, and if everyone uses them all the time.
  • This is a lot to ask!
  • I can’t guarantee that Steve Race and Robert Weygant are doing this, for example.
