INDOOR OUTDOOR LIVING

Glass Box Continuity illusions

  • 100% glass extensions give a false illusion of continuity between inside and out
  • You live in your neighbour’s goldfish bowl and probably feel exposed and object to overlooking
  • Big sliding/folding glass doors open whole room to garden and let weather, intruders, spores, insects and wildlife into house
  • Big sliding/folding insect screens are needed to keep nature out
  • Flush thresholds and same paving inside and out give wheel access, an illusion of continuous space, challenging material choices and rainwater drainage
  • You might want and need some wind protection and solar shading or you will need air-conditioning at great expense of energy and carbon to you and planet

Conservatories

  • Most PVC glazed conservatories have no opening windows in vertical and sloping planes so overheat in summer and are cold in winter
  • 80% of UK Conservatories are heated with fossil fuels and many used all year round
  • Building Regulations require closable doors/windows between house and conservatory to minimise squandering heat
  • Many homes have no doors or windows between conservatory and house so heating house is expensive
  • PVC sector continuation and job creation scheme is to add insulating panels to roofs of overheating conservatories
  • If panels contain plastic or mineral fibre they will still overheat in summer
  • See Also: GBE CPD B12 Conservatories,
  • GBE B12 Conservatories Checklist

Case Study: HHP Hockerton Housing Project

  • Terraced housing with gardens and solar space on south elevation across full width of houses
  • An indoor-outdoor extra living or working space for DIY repairs, crafts, art, tinkering, clothes drying
  • Solar shading is needed to glazed solar space ideally externally but can work if internally
  • solar space is ventilated in vertical and pitched planes, so it is usable in summer
  • Solar spaces are heated by sun not fossil fuel, surrounded by thermal mass it stays warm for longer in winter
  • If there is no sun you retreat into warm cave, a high thermal mass home beyond

Outdoor furniture

  • Outdoor furniture needs to be weather tolerant or be covered or stored to protect it from deterioration
  • Plant based furniture and plastics need to be ultra-violate (UV) light resistant to prevent them becoming brittle and break
  • Plastics can also be faded by UV light, fading is an excuse for throwing out unsightly furniture
  • Choose pale grey or white plastic outdoor furniture so fading is less of a risk

24 Sustainable Development Goals

  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
  • The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
  • Countries have committed to prioritize progress for those who’re furthest behind. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls.
  • The creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources from all of society is necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context.
