Definitions

Wind Washing

When insulating properties of insulation are reduced or eliminated due to air-current penetration removing heat.
Boards above eaves insulation channelling ventilation air and preventing heat removal from insulation.
(Energy Star ’07 & NGS BRM ‘10)

Wind Washing

Air movement in cavities wall or in lofts, blowing over the air permable surface of thermal insulation, drawing heat out as ot passes.
Masonry cavity walls suffer especially with partial fill insulation batts made of mineral wool.
In Austria a membrane would be used in partial fill cavity wall insulation to reduce this method of heat less.
Low emissivity foil faced board insulation, Breather Membranes, Wind tightness layers and breathing sheathing boards can control heat loss from insulation subject to wind washing.
(NGS BRM ’10 – GBE BRM ’16)

Relevance to Environmental Construction:

Competency:

  • Wind washing will increase the rate of heat loss from the building
  • Persistent wind washing may result in thermal bridges through the insulation
  • Persistent thermal bridges will create conditions for interstitial or surface condensation
  • Interstitial condensation can initiate rot in any embedded timbers

Healthy:

  • Surface Condensation can initiate ever present spores into life and development of mould
  • Mould can create respiratory illness, asthma,
  • Toxic Mould can lead to unusable buildings, loss of possessions, loss of home and death.
