To what extent do you think the industry properly considers renewable energy at the design stage of a project and how can this be influenced?

We should be thinking fabric first, that includes:

size
form factor
winter U values and
summer decrement delay

But then we should also be thinking:

orientation of the building,
orientation of the glazing and
orientation of the roof, and its ability to carry PV and other RE installations.

We must not forget seasonal PV or RE optimisation

summer overhead sun paths
winter shallow sun paths
consider all years solar tracking or
daily solar hinging/rotating

We must also think about:

energy demand profile
PV energy supply profile and
PV orientation to minimise battery installation
to match battery capacity to the demand profile.

We must also think about:

the consequence of Building Integrated PV
additions to the risk of summer overheating of roofs and upper floors.

We should also understand:

that optimising orientation is not the wholly grail,
since existing roofs are often facing the wrong way
and they will still benefit from non-optimum PV orientation

Architectural education will never arm architects with this level of knowledge,

so I suggest the RE and PV sectors
start writing and drawing the illustrated guides
(because architects can’t read)
to educate them.

These guides will be suitable for a wider audience.
